In boats and streams questions, it majorly depends on downstream and upstream. If boat is going against the stream then it is upstream else downstream. If the speed of the boat in still water is b, and speed of the stream is s, then speed downstream = (b+s) and speed upstream = (b-s). If speed downstream is d, and speed upstream is u then, speed in still water is = 1/2(d+u) kmph and rate of stream is = 1/2(d-u)kmph.
